Every year, International Women’s Day invites us to reflect on the progress made toward gender equality - and the work that still lies ahead. It is a moment to recognise the resilience of women, the challenges many continue to face, and the collective responsibility we share in building a more equitable and compassionate world.

For Amirrah, this day holds particular meaning. Our work sits at the intersection of sexual and reproductive health, emotional wellbeing, and social justice - areas that remain deeply affected by stigma, silence, and unequal access to care in many parts of the world.

Across communities in India and Kenya, women’s health journeys are often shaped not only by physical needs but also by emotional pressures, social expectations, and structural barriers. Conversations about reproductive choices, trauma, fertility, parenting, and caregiving are still surrounded by silence in many spaces.

At Amirrah, we believe that women’s health cannot be separated from emotional wellbeing. Every decision about one’s body, family, and future is connected to mental health, autonomy, and dignity.

Why This Work Matters

For many women, experiences related to sexual and reproductive health are accompanied by complex emotional realities.

Women navigating sexual trauma, reproductive loss, childbirth experiences, fertility challenges, or the pressures of early parenthood often carry emotional burdens that remain unseen or unsupported.

Yet support systems for these experiences are still limited, particularly when mental health services are not integrated into reproductive healthcare.

Recognising and addressing this gap is at the heart of Amirrah’s mission.

What Amirrah Is Working Towards

Since its inception, Amirrah has focused on creating safe, informed, and compassionate spaces where individuals can access support for the emotional aspects of sexual and reproductive health.

Our work centres on:

  • Mental health support linked to reproductive experiences, including trauma, fertility challenges, pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, and caregiving stress

  • Educational resources and public awareness initiatives that encourage open, stigma-free conversations around sexual and reproductive wellbeing

  • Advocacy for trauma-informed care, recognising that many reproductive health experiences carry emotional and psychological impacts

  • Community engagement and dialogue, helping individuals feel less alone in experiences that are often silenced.

Through these efforts, Amirrah aims to bridge the gap between physical healthcare and emotional care, recognising that both are essential for true wellbeing.

What We’ve Learned Along the Way

Our work has reinforced an important truth: Women do not only need services - they need spaces where their experiences are believed, understood, and respected.

Across our conversations, programmes, and outreach, we have seen how powerful it can be when individuals are able to speak openly about topics that have long been considered private or taboo.

We have also seen how deeply interconnected these experiences are.A conversation about fertility may also be a conversation about grief. A discussion about parenting may reveal layers of stress, identity change, and emotional strain. A story about reproductive health may also be a story about autonomy and choice.

These connections remind us that care must be holistic.

Looking Ahead

International Women’s Day is not only a celebration - it is also a commitment.

For Amirrah, the work ahead continues to focus on expanding awareness, strengthening mental health support systems, and advocating for care models that recognise the full humanity of women’s experiences.

Progress often begins with conversation - and every conversation that reduces stigma, encourages understanding, or offers support moves us closer to a more compassionate future.

On this #InternationalWomensDay, we honour the strength, complexity, and resilience of women everywhere, and we reaffirm our commitment to creating spaces where women’s health, both, emotional and physical - is supported with dignity and care.
